Thierry Job is not an architect; he is a spectator of architecture. He is interested in the occupation of space through architecture, whether it be as shelter, as a monument to faith or power, or as simply functional.

 

Architecture as symbol is of particular interest to Job; places like Versailles, the World Trade Center, the Taj Mahal express power and history in their monumentality. The progressive structures of Le Corbusier, the genius Buckminster Fuller, Frank Gerry, Rem Koolhass, Renzo Piano, Rudy Ricciotti, Zaha Hadid became signatures of the 20th and 21st centuries.

 

He is also fascinated by the irrational occupation of space taken up by motels, gas stations, airports, cathedrals, temples, churches, and other buildings not always done with the best sense of ecology. Anonymous buildings or constructions in villages and cities, “small” architecture, industrial architecture, craft architecture, tipis, yurts, tree houses, tents for nomads — these intrigue the artist as well.

 

Job’s interest goes also towards what is called nanotecture and mobitecture, smart solutions for people on the move or in movement such as the homeless or long terms travelers.

 

These are the structures that prompted the artist to create “sketches” of Detroit looking at the anonymous buildings throughout the city that become more recognized because of the reconstruction.
